Man killed in Steilacoom train accident has been identified

The man who died Tuesday after he was struck by a freight train in Steilacoom has been identified.

Remy Velarde, 23, of Houston, Texas, died at Madigan Army Medical Center, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office. His death was an accident, the office ruled.

Velarde was hit while he was on the mainline tracks that travel between a steep cliff and Puget Sound.

Rescue crews used a boat, helicopter and ambulance to transport him to Madigan. He later died at the hospital.
