New internship program to hire ages 16-24 at Pierce County businesses, pays up to $5,000

A new internship program is looking for people ages 16-24 to make up to $5,000 while helping businesses fill needed positions.

The program, Hire Pierce County: Next Gen, gives applicants some flexibility to choose where they want to work. Businesses have partnered with Goodwill, WorkForce Central and Pierce County government for the program.

“We have had over 120 businesses express interest in this program, many of which are local, small businesses that were hard hit by the pandemic — as well as many non-profits who are also trying to stay afloat in today’s economy,” Katie Miles, regional youth program manager for Goodwill of the Olympics & Rainier Region, said in an email.

The program is looking to serve over 120 young people through June, with positions running up to 16 weeks at 20 hours per week. Participants can earn $15 per hour during their internship and a $200 stipend for completing the program.

People can apply for the program at workforce-central.org. Enrollment will continue into early 2022.

“The earlier young adults register, the more opportunities will be available for them to choose from,” said Joanna Rasmussen, director of communications for WorkForce Central, in an email.

In addition to work experience, the program offers resume and career-building support, ongoing coaching and mentoring, skills training, financial literacy training and letters of recommendation.

The program was made possible with $1 million in funding from Pierce County through the American Rescue Plan Act.
