Single-car collision on southbound I-5 near Fife leaves 1 woman dead
A 57-year-old Auburn woman died on southbound Interstate 5 on Tuesday morning after crashing into a tree, Washington State Patrol troopers said.
The crash occurred just south of Porter Way near Fife. Trooper Robert Reyer said the crash occurred at about 3:30 a.m. A woman driving a silver 1998 Honda Accord drove off the right side of the road, where the car went through a grassy ditch and several feet of standing water before striking a tree head on. The car was found about 50 feet from the road.
The woman killed in the crash has not been identified.
“We do not know at this point what the cause was really,” Reyer said.
A collision technician did not find any signs indicating that the woman tried to brake before the crash occurred, Reyer said. He said that could mean the woman fell asleep at the wheel or had a medical emergency that left her unconscious.
At about 7:15 a.m., the right lane of the interstate was blocked while a tow truck recovered the crashed vehicle. The road was back open by about 7:50 a.m.
