Tacoma walrus E.T. regains appetite, returns to exhibit

Beloved Tacoma walrus E.T. has returned to his exhibit at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium after after six weeks battling a serious gastrointestinal infection.

“Overall, we’re very pleased with his recovery,” head veterinarian Dr. Karen Wolf said Wednesday.

The 32-year-old Pacific walrus went back in the pool of the Rocky Shores area of the zoo Tuesday, and spent about six hours.

While E.T.’s appetite has returned, caretakers are limiting the 3,000-pound walrus’s swimming time until they’re sure his stamina is back, the zoo said.

The geriatric mammal also is receiving medicine for arthritis, according to the zoo.

Caretakers will keep monitoring E.T.’s blood work to assess his health, they said.
