Fire investigators believe someone set blaze at Tacoma house

Investigators believe a fire that heavily damaged a vacant two-story house Monday evening was intentionally set, Tacoma Fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said Tuesday.

Firefighters were called about 9:25 p.m. to the 1000 block of South Seventh Street and found thick smoke and heavy flames coming from the second floor of a 1,568-square-foot house.

It took a half hour to extinguish the blaze, which fire investigators said started in an upstairs bedroom after someone forced their way into the boarded up house.

“We are handling it as a suspicious fire investigation at this point due to there not being power to the residence and no immediate cause for a fire to have started,” police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The blaze caused an estimated $65,000 in damage.
