Work wrapping up on new state Route 16 ramp to Interstate 5

Drivers waiting for work to finish on the eastbound state Route 16 ramps in the Nalley Valley have reason to celebrate.

One of the new ramps — the connector to northbound Interstate 5 — is scheduled to open July 12, the state Department of Transportation said Friday.

But first several ramp and roadway closures are needed to finish paving and striping.

The new ramp will give drivers a dedicated lane to northbound I-5, eliminating the need to merge. After the ramp opens drivers headed in either direction of I-5 will have to move into the correct lane earlier than they do now on eastbound state Route 16.

Closures scheduled for next week include:

11 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday: All lanes of eastbound state Route 16 at South Union Avenue and South Union Avenue on-ramp to eastbound state Route 16 will be closed. Detour via South Union Avenue.

9 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday: Northbound I-5 exit (No. 133) to City Center will be closed.

11 p.m. Thursday to 4 a.m. Friday: All lanes of eastbound state Route 16 at South Union Avenue and South Union Avenue on-ramp to eastbound state Route 16 will be closed. Detour via South Union Avenue.

10 p.m. Friday: All lanes of eastbound state Route 16 at South Union Avenue and South Union Avenue on-ramp to eastbound state Route 16 will be closed.

10 p.m. Friday to 7:30 a.m. Saturday: Southbound I-5 exit (No. 132) to South 38th Street will be closed. Southbound I-5 on-ramp to westbound state Route 16 will remain open.

Midnight Friday to 5:30 a.m. Saturday: Northbound I-5 exit (No. 133) to City Center will be closed.

7:30 a.m.: Weather-permitting, the new ramp from eastbound state route 16 to northbound I-5 will be opened. Southbound I-5 motorists might have delays approaching the exit to South 38th Street.
