Heat wave blamed for blood shortage

The Puget Sound Blood Center announced Wednesday in a press release it is experiencing a blood shortage due to the recent heat wave.

Officials said the high temperatures have caused the cancellation or suspension of more than a half dozen blood drives during the past week at locations without proper climate control.

The center suspends blood drives when temperatures at the location exceed 80 degrees, said James AuBuchon, president of the center.

Officials are urging donors to schedule an appointment at one of the 11 centers around Western Washington to help with the shortage.
