Firefighters battle apartment, brush fire in Renton

Fire officials said a four-alarm fire damaged multiple apartment buildings Saturday afternoon, and the fire spread to nearby brush.

Crews responded to a report of a commercial fire in the 1400 block of South 18th Street about 2 p.m.

Skyway fire officials initially said the fire was a two-alarm fire. It then increased to a four-alarm fire.

Crews from Renton, Skyway, Tukwila, Kent, SeaTac, South King Valley Regional, King County Medical 1 and East Pierce Fire & Rescue were at the scene.

Fire officials have not said if there were any injuries.

Three buildings at the Regency Woods Apartment were destroyed and two buildings were heavily damaged, according to fire officials.

Crews from East Pierce Fire & Rescue and three other fire departments in Pierce County were assisting in fighting the blaze, said East Pierce Fire & Rescue Chief Jerry Thorson. Other departments included Central Pierce Fire & Rescue and Orting Valley Fire & Rescue.

About a dozen firefighters from Pierce County were on the scene after the Pierce County Engine Strike team was activated to help, Thorson said. Pierce County was called to assist after King County used all of its mutual aid, Thorson said.

Thorson, who wasn’t at the scene, said the strike team is not often called for.
