Brush fire in Puyallup burns 1.5 acres

Crews evacuated a Group Health building as a precaution Monday when a brush fire burned about 1.5 acres in Puyallup.

The fire was reported about 1:20 p.m. in a field behind the Lowe’s Home Improvement store at 3511 Fifth St. SE. Firefighters contained the fire shortly after 2 p.m., according to Central Pierce Fire & Rescue.

“The wind was driving the fire away from Lowe’s, but it was threatening a power substation to the southeast,” Assistant Chief Ed Hrivnak said.

In addition to evacuating the Group Health building, crews kept a close eye on neighborhoods in the area.

No cause was determined Monday.
