Evening I-5 lane closures near Lakewood to continue this week

Evening I-5 lane closures continue

Nighttime lane closures on Interstate 5 near Lakewood will continue this week after drivers got a short break from the construction during Labor Day weekend.

Similar work last week caused late-night traffic backups, and transportation officials are warning drivers to avoid the area.

Workers are repaving portions of southbound I-5 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. each evening from Tuesday (Sept. 2) through Saturday (Sept. 6).

The repaving will affect parts of I-5 between Berkeley Street (exit 122) and just south of the Joint Base Lewis-McChord main gate (milepost 120).

While the work is underway, the freeway will be reduced to one lane in each direction, according to a news release from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

Construction will also close several freeway onramps and offramps in the area from Tuesday to Saturday. On Tuesday night, drivers won’t be able to access I-5 from Berkeley Street at all.
