A local church plans to take over the University Place fire station recently vacated by West Pierce Fire and Rescue.
Sunset Bible Church will use the station at 7909 40th St. W. as a temporary meeting space while expanding on its existing location at the corner of 44th Street West and Sunset Drive, according to information from the church. It hopes to move into the station by January, after the building is modified.
The church bought the more-than-50-year-old station for $1.3 million, according to West Pierce Capt. Jenny Weekes. The deal was finalized Aug. 15.
Sunset Bible Church has been in University Place since 1971 and has held services at Narrows View Intermediate School for nine years after outgrowing its worship building. The fire station location will allow the church to have additional service times and expanded children’s programs.
The church plans eventually to use the fire station as a youth and family services center to benefit the community.
The engine company that operated out of the fire station moved at the end of July to another West Pierce station at Drexler Drive, near the city of University Place’s civic building. The company joined another engine company and medic unit staffed by two emergency responders.
