Croatian prime minister headed to Gig Harbor, local cradle of Croatian heritage

A leader from the Republic of Croatia is coming to Gig Harbor on Sunday, and the public is invited to welcome him on the waterfront where generations of Croatian fishing families have made their livings.

Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic will make a special visit that includes a 9:30 a.m. welcome ceremony at Skansie Brothers Park, 3207 Harborview Drive. It is expected to run 45 minutes.

Milanovic planned a trip to Seattle as part of a larger visit to meet with American information technology companies to discuss potential investment and cooperation. He will also visit San Francisco and New York.

The sidetrip to Gig Harbor was added after someone from the community contacted the Croatian embassy in Washington, D.C. and explained the city’s Croatian ties.

Milanovic’s visit to Gig Harbor will include a Pierce Transit trolley tour of city streets named after Croatian pioneers, a visit to the Harbor History Museum and a private lunch.

Small Croatian flags will be distributed to the public prior to his arrival at Skansie Park.
