Endangered lowland anoa stillborn at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium

Caretakers couldn’t revive a stillborn lowland anoa calf at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

The calf was in the breech position for the birth Thursday night and never took a breath, the zoo said.

Anoas, an endangered species of water buffalo, live in forests and swamps on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

The calf’s mother, 12-year-old Baby Bean, and father, 11-year-old Pinto Bean, are the only anoas at Point Defiance.

Staff are running tests to determine why the calf died.

Point Defiance is one of six accredited zoos in North America that exhibit the animals.
