Cause of fatal University Place apartment fire being investigated

Officials had yet to release the name Monday of a woman who died in a Sunday apartment fire in University Place, pending notification of her family.

The fire started in the unit where the woman was found, but investigators Monday had not determined what caused it, West Pierce Fire & Rescue spokeswoman Hallie McCurdy said.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at the Narrows Ridge apartment about 5:15 p.m. at 2326 70th Ave. W.

A man was hurt trying to rescue the woman who died, and was taken to the hospital. His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

A dog, in the same unit as the woman, also died.

The fire affected six units in the building. McCurdy did not know Monday how many people had been displaced.
