A 78-year-old man who fired at his roommate Saturday fatally shot himself before a SWAT team forced its way into his home, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
The man possibly suffered from dementia and became angry when his roommate, who also was his caretaker, called her sister to help her move out.
“He got upset with them enough that he fired a shot inside the house in their direction,” detective Sgt. Jerry Bates said Wednesday.
The women fled the home in the 8600 block of Island Boulevard and called 911.

A negotiator responded but the man refused to talk, and the SWAT team was called.
When the team entered the home about 11:35 p.m., the man was found dead inside of a gunshot wound.
The standoff lasted about 4½ hours.
