‘Hope, resilience and building community’ become theme of 2022 Tacoma Reads program

Mayor Victoria Woodards on Thursday announced the 2022 selections for the annual Tacoma Reads program, in hopes the city’s residents will explore the books together and find inspiration following two pandemic-filled years.

The mayor said this year’s selections were chosen to focus on themes of “hope, resilience and building community.” The announcement was part of the annual State of the City address.

This year’s selection for children is “Thank You, Omu!” by Oge Mora, a picture book illustrating “concepts of generosity and care for one’s community,” Woodards said Thursday.

“We Belong” by Cookie Hiponia Everman is the selection for youths and is a story of immigration “with elements of Filipino folklore woven throughout.”

The main selection is “Afterlife,” by Julia Alvarez. As for the main book selected, the mayor noted that it “asks the meaningful question, ‘How do we live in a broken world without losing faith in one another or ourselves?’”

Tacoma Reads is an annual program run in partnership with Tacoma Public Library.
