Man killed in hit-and-run on SR-7 in Spanaway is identified by medical examiner

A 22-year-old man killed last week in a hit-and-run on state Route 7 in Spanaway was identified Wednesday by the Pierce County medical examiner.

Case Doveno of Tacoma died April 7 of multiple blunt force injuries after being struck by two vehicles in the southbound lanes of state Route 7, just before Field Road East. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death an accident.

The collision occurred at about 12:54 a.m. while Doveno was crossing the the southbound lanes of the highway, according to a news release from the Washington State Patrol. One car hit the man and stopped at the scene, and then seconds later, a second vehicle struck him and continued driving.

State troopers issued a news release the same day asking the public for assistance identifying the second driver. Trooper John Dattilo said the driver has since turned himself in, and he will not face criminal charges.

The driver told investigators he thought he struck a piece of car debris on the road and was not aware that he hit a person until he saw news articles about the incident.

He was released after being interviewed.
