A 37-year-old man died Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle crash in Pierce County near Elbe after his minivan went off the road and struck a tree, the Washington State Patrol said.

The man killed was identified as William Barger of Bonney Lake, according to a news release from WSP. Troopers said Barger was driving west on state Route 706 at 212th Avenue East when his vehicle left the road to the right and hit a tree.

Barger was declared dead at the scene, troopers said.

The incident was reported at about 7:39 a.m. It’s not clear why Barger drove off the road. He was not wearing a seat belt.
