Suspected drunken driver causes fatal crash into guardrail in Spanaway, troopers say
A 22-year-old Tacoma man died early Friday morning in Spanaway when the car he was riding in collided with a guardrail on state Route 507, near the Roy Y intersection, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Troopers suspect excessive speed and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol were the causes of the crash. The driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old Tacoma woman, was injured and transported to St. Joseph Medical Center. According to a news release from WSP, she is expected to be charged with DUI vehicular homicide.
The man killed in the crash has not been publicly identified. Troopers said he was not wearing a seat belt. The driver was wearing one.
Troopers said the crash occurred at about 12:37 a.m. when the woman’s car was traveling south on state Route 7. As the driver approached state Route 507, she failed to negotiate the curve, continued straight and left the roadway.
The car continued across state Route 507, struck a guardrail and rolled off the roadway, coming to a stop just south of the highway. The male passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the crash, the roadway was blocked for nearly three hours.
