Radio traffic: Olympia shooting, moment by moment

Police radio traffic from an officer-involved shooting early Thursday in Olympia shows that the key moments of the encounter between Officer Ryan Donald, Bryson Chaplin and Andre Thompson lasted about six minutes. An employee of the Safeway store at 3215 Harrison Ave. W. calls 911 to report an attempted theft by two men.

Employee: “He stole a beer earlier and he tried to do it again. He threw the beer at me and hit my hand.

“He’s at the fuel station right now. He’s running — but they’re both on skateboards.”

Dispatcher: “So he stole a beer and threw it at you?”

Employee: “He threw a case at me — glass beer.”

The employee went on to provide descriptions of the two men, which were passed on to police. Both were described as African-American, one with a baseball cap and a tattoo on his neck, both carrying skateboards.

1:01 a.m.

Olympia police begin searching for the suspects, who are reportedly headed in the direction of Cooper Point Road.

1:12 a.m.

Officer Ryan Donald, reporting as “Boyd23,” sees a pair of men matching the suspect descriptions.

Donald: “Two on skateboards, down Cooper Point, it’s gonna be before 14th …”

1:14 a.m.

Donald: “They’re gonna be 1200 block of Cooper Point …”

Within a minute, Donald approaches the men, and reports that he has fired his weapon.

1:15 a.m.

Donald: “Shots fired!”

Dispatcher: “23 has shots fired.”

Donald: “I got shots fired — I believe one of them’s hit. Both of them are running northbound on Cooper Point.”

Dispatcher: “Copy — shots fired, possibly one hit.”

(Other units begin to respond)

1:16 a.m.

Donald: “They’re in the woods — they’re gonna be to the west … they’re right here in the woods — I believe they’re still heading west through the woods.”

Unidentified officer: “23, Do they have a weapon?”

Donald: “No, he assaulted me with a skateboard. I tried to grab his friend. They’re very aggressive, just so you know … I got movement in the woods.”

1:17 a.m.

Donald: “I got one at gunpoint.”

Dispatch: “23 has one at gunpoint.”

Donald (voice rising): “I got both of them — I need assistance.”

Dispatch: “23 has both, needs assistance.”

Donald: “Shots fired, one down!”

Dispatch: “Shots fired, one down.”

Donald: “Can I get more units, please?”

(Multiple units respond via radio, telling Donald they are responding.)

Donald: “I got two down — they are shot.”

1:18 a.m.

Donald reports “more people in the woods.” Other officers approaching the scene.

Donald: “I’m standing on Cooper Point, probably about the 1200 block. One of them’s in the middle of the roadway — one of them’s on the side.”

Dispatch tells Donald that multiple units from Tumwater and Thurston County are headed for his location.

Donald: “We got ALS (advanced life support) coming, correct?”

Dispatch: “23, would you like two, or just the one?”

Donald: “Two.”

1:20 a.m.

Dispatch reports that medics have been dispatched. Donald describes “two suspects with gunshot wounds to the torso.”
