Tacoma police divers recover scuba diver’s body

Tacoma police divers recovered the body of a female scuba diver Saturday from the waters of Commencement Bay.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman Sunday as 50-year-old Candace Sneed of Portland.

Tacoma Police Department spokeswoman Loretta Cool said police received a call shortly after 1 p.m. from a recreational diver who had come across the submerged body.

She said police divers recovered the body about 5 p.m.

Crews searched for the scuba diver Wednesday after she did not resurface with her dive group.

The woman had received her scuba certification only two weeks earlier, police said, and was one of eight people who came up from Portland to dive in the open waters of Commencement Bay.

Search divers and boats from multiple agencies, including the Tacoma Fire Department and Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, looked for the woman. The U.S. Coast Guard called off the search Thursday morning after crews failed to turn up signs of the missing diver.
