No injuries in fire at Narrows Marina seen on US Open broadcast

Firefighters doused a blaze at a Narrows Marina boathouse Saturday evening.

The fire destroyed a small boathouse at Aaron’s Marine Service and at least 30 boats inside, Tacoma Fire Department safety officer Allen Estes said.

No one was injured.

Estes said investigators may not be able to determine the cause of the fire, which caused an estimated $4 million in damages.

The Narrows Marina is at the end of South 19th Street in Tacoma, several miles from where the U.S. Open is ongoing at Chambers Bay in University Place.

Smoke and flames from the fire were visible during the national broadcast of the golf tournament.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue assisted Tacoma Fire with the blaze.

Firefighters arrived just before 5 p.m.

Witness Shaelynne Mead, an employee at a business near Narrows Marina, said she saw the initial flames and smoke and left to notify her supervisor.

When she returned moments later, she said, the flames had grown “a lot.”
