Rain and cooler weather will return Monday and Tuesday after a break on Sunday in the Puget Sound region.

On Saturday, rain will transition to showers with more scattered coverage. The high will be 47 degrees and the low will be 40 degrees, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

For the Puget Sound region’s first front of fall, Tacoma saw about 0.4 inches of rain in 24 hours, starting at 5 a.m. Friday, and Olympia saw about 0.48 inches of rain in 24 hours, according to the National Weather Service Seattle.

Sunday will be dry and partly sunny, with a high near 49 degrees. A second, wetter system will arrive late Sunday night through Monday morning, according to the NWS forecast. The probability of precipitation is 90% and gusty wind could top at 30 mph on Monday. The heaviest rain will be on Monday morning, especially over the Olympic and Cascade Mountains. A quarter to a half of an inch of rain is possible on Monday. The high will be near 49 degrees.

Rain will continue on Tuesday, with a 85% precipitation probability and wind gusts from 15 mph to 30 mph.

In the lowlands, moderate to heavy rain may lead to slick road conditions, as well as roadway ponding and minor nuisance flooding of poor drainage areas, creating difficult commute conditions. In the mountains, periods of heavy rain could lead to flash flooding or debris flows from area burn scars. Snow levels will lower, reaching around 3,500 feet on Saturday and may affect backcountry activities. Accumulation on road surfaces may be delayed or mitigated due to warm ground and road temperatures.

On Sunday and Monday, snow levels will remain around 4,000 feet.

Later in the week, there is about a 45% chance of rain on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
