Officers with the Fife Police Department were dispatched Sunday afternoon to reports of a bomb threat left in the engineers compartment of a solo locomotive stalled behind a strip mall. K-9 units searched the area and found no signs of explosives or devices, giving the all clear about an hour later.

The Fife Police Department first reported the incident just after 12 p.m. April 9. Assistant Chief David Claridge said the businesses that were open near the intersection of 20th Street East and Port of Tacoma Road were asked to evacuate the area. Police also made a nearby gas station off limits until the scene had been cleared.

Claridge said the single locomotive had been sitting at the Union Pacific main switchyard in Fife for some time. He said some engineers went to move the locomotive when they discovered a note in the engineers compartment.

Claridge said UPRR detectives have been called to the scene and will continue the investigation, and local federal authorities have been notified of the incident as well.
