A single-engine Cessna airplane carrying two people made an emergency landing Tuesday morning at the Tacoma Narrows Airport, according to Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One. No one was hurt.

Emergency crews responded to the airport in Wollochet at about 10:40 a.m. while the plane was still in the air, Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One spokesperson Tina Curran said. She said the aircraft’s landing gear malfunctioned. A wheel at its nose did not deploy, and its two rear wheels only partially deployed.

The pilot flew by the airport several times before landing sometime after 11 a.m., Curran said. She said the plane landed on the runway and skidded off onto a field. Its two rear wheels collapsed.

“It seems pretty amazing and fabulous it was a successful landing” Curran said. “There was some damage to the underside, but for the most part, it was a pretty significant tragedy averted.”

It’s unclear where the airplane took off from or where it planned to land.
