The city of Lakewood and Pierce College broke ground Friday at Fort Steilacoom Park, celebrating a partnership that will bring much-needed improvements to the park’s baseball field. Construction is expected to begin the week of Aug. 7.

Improvements to Field 1, which will be developed to meet National Collegiate Athletic Association standards, include the following elements:

  • A full-field synthetic turf
  • A new backstop
  • Field lighting
  • New dugouts
  • Expanded and accessible spectator seating
  • Fencing
  • Batting cages
  • A press box
  • Scoreboard
  • Storage areas
  • Other safety elements and utilities

The project is estimated to cost $7 million. Pierce College will pay the full cost to build the home field and additional improvements, and the city of Lakewood will contribute $1.6 million in grant funding to the project, according to a Friday press release.

Fort Steilacoom Park is Lakewood’s largest, with 340 acres. Other park amenities are an extensive network of trails, softball and soccer fields, off-leash dog parks, picnic shelters and a drone/RC flight area.
