Red Cross disaster team working with displaced residents after deadly Lakewood fire

Emergency relief workers on Saturday were assisting residents affected by Friday’s fire that swept through a Lakewood mobile home park.

Abby Walker, media representative for the American Red Cross Northwest Region, told The News Tribune via email that an evacuation center was set up Friday evening for displaced residents of the Jamestown Estate mobile home park, 7110 146th St. SW.

Friday’s fire broke out in the area of 146th Street Southwest and Murray Road Southwest, close to Interstate 5.

“Starting this afternoon, our Disaster Action Team is working one on one with each individual and family to discuss emergency needs and start the process of recovery,” Walker wrote Saturday.

“At this time, I do not have a number of how many people are in need of our help,” she added.

Walker advised that anyone affected by the fire should call 1-800-733-2767.

“We will then be able to sit down and open a case with them, discuss their needs, and connect them with the Red Cross resources that will help them most,” she said.

Friday’s fire left two men dead and nine homes destroyed after a brush fire swept through a portion of the mobile home park in the Woodbrook neighborhood in Lakewood.

Five additional homes were heavily damaged, West Pierce Fire & Rescue officials said Friday night.

The residents are largely Latino and recently purchased the park, according to an Associated Press story from April.

A GoFund Me page set up by one of the families affected noted they had worked on their home “for months and we were almost complete.”

The cause of the 5-acre brush fire is under investigation.
