Three people died Friday in a crash on a Forest Service road near Greenwater, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The single-vehicle wreck was reported about 5:39 a.m. on U.S. Forest Service Road 70 less than a mile east of state Route 410, deputies said in a blog post.

A passerby called 911 to report spotting a burning vehicle that had gone off the road and that there appeared to be at least one dead person inside.

Deputies and firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters extinguished the flames, which had spread to nearby vegetation, according to the blog post.

Deputies then examined the car and found what they believe to be the remains of three people inside.

“Traffic investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash and to identify the victims,” the Sheriff’s Department reported.
