These are Tacoma’s five most dangerous roads, according to local law injury attorneys

Whether if its a small fender bender or a more serious wreck, car crashes are unfortunately much more common than we’d like them to be. But have you ever wondered which roads in Tacoma have the most crashes that result in severe injuries or fatalities?

In 2021, there were 24 fatal car accidents in Tacoma that resulted in 27 fatalities, according to citydata.com.

Ladenburg Law Injury Attorneys, a group of injury attorney’s based in Tacoma, used the Washington State Department of Transportation’s Crash Data Portal to create a list of the most dangerous roads in Tacoma. The Ladenburg analysis evaluated crash data that resulted in serious injury or fatal car crashes between 2017 and 2021.

Below are the 5 most dangerous roads in Tacoma that emerged from that analysis.

5 most dangerous roads in Tacoma

#1: I-5 Stretch from Fife to the 38th Street Exit

Ladenburg Law Injury Attorneys listed the stretch of between Fife and the exit to 38th street on Interstate 5 as the most dangerous road in Tacoma. There were 36 serious injury or fatal crashes within the five-year period that was evaluated, according to Ladenburg Law.

Aside from the number of crashes that resulted in serious injury or fatalities, the law firm attributed this stretch as the most dangerous because it “typically has a lot going on between ongoing construction and several key exits, including Highway 16 and the Tacoma Dome/City Center,” according to their blog post.

According to the WSDOT crash data, in 2022, this stretch of highway had three serious injury car crashes and one fatal crash. So far in 2023, there have been three serious injury crashes and four fatal crashes.

#2: Pacific Avenue from E. 34th – E. 84th Streets

The stretch of Pacific Avenue between east 34th Street and east 84th Street came in at #2 on the law firm’s list of most dangerous roads in Tacoma.

Ladenburg Law Injury Attorneys said that according to the data they reviewed, Pacific Avenue had two sections in which crashes were more prominent, one of them being between east 34th Street and east 84th Street which is just outside of downtown. The law firm did not mention an exact number of crashes on this stretch.

In 2022, there were 11 serious injury crashes and three fatality crashes, and there were 10 serious injury crashes and four fatal crashes this year, according to the WSDOT crash data.

#3- 72nd Street from Sheridan – Waller

The I-5 exit to 72nd Street between Sheridan and Waller came in at #3 on the list. According to the law firm’s evaluation of data, this stretch of road had a high number of serious accidents, including five fatal crashes, which is more than any other road on the list.

There were three serious injury crashes and two fatal crashes in 2022, and there were four serious injury crashes and one fatal crash this year, according to the WSDOT crash data.

#4: Portland Avenue from E. 29th – 72nd

Portland Avenue, another high-use Tacoma-area exit off of I-5, came in fourth place on the list as most dangerous. The law firm did not give a specific number of crashes that occurred on this stretch of road, but said “it’s also another hub of serious collisions in Tacoma,” according to their blog post.

According to the WSDOT crash data, in 2022, there were four serious injury crashes and three fatal crashes. This year, there has been six serious injury crashes and two fatal crashes.

#5: 56th from South Tacoma Way – Waller

Ladenburg Law Injury Attorneys rated the stretch of road on 56th Street between South Tacoma Way and Waller at fifth-most dangerous in Tacoma. This road had a total of 15 serious crashes between 2017-2022, which makes it “a dangerous area for Tacoma drivers,” according to the law firm.

This year, there were three serious injury car accidents and one fatal car accident, according to the WSDOT crash data.

This road takes you near the Tacoma mall area and intersects with Portland Avenue and Pacific Avenue, both of which also had sections that made it to the top five most dangerous roads.
