A man was hit and killed by an Amtrak train in south Tacoma Saturday morning, according to Tacoma police.

About 10:20 a.m., police and fire crews were dispatched to the area of South 56th Street and South Tacoma Way after a report of a person injured by a train, Detective William Muse said Sunday.

The victim was one of two people who apparently were walking along the tracks in that area. They supposedly did not hear the Amtrak train, Muse said.

Tacoma fire and Amtrak could not be reached.

A spokesperson for BNSF Railway, who checked on train activity in the area Saturday morning, confirmed the fatality collision. The tracks were cleared about 1:30 p.m., she said.
