Moose calf at Northwest Trek is ready for its closeup

A newborn moose is treating Northwest Trek visitors to close-up viewings.

It’s the first moose born at the wildlife park near Eatonville in 15 years and officials said it is being regularly spotted by those riding the tram through the free-roaming area.

It’s still unclear whether the nameless calf is a boy or girl. Keepers continue to monitor the moose closely and estimate it is about 30 pounds but getting stronger every day as it continues nursing.

Connie, the mama moose, is keeping her young one close.

“She’s bonding well with her calf,” deputy director Alan Varsik said. “So far everything looks good.”

The dad, Ellis, is in the 425-acre free-roaming area as well.

Both parents were brought to Northwest Trek as orphans in 2012 and are now 3. The park also boasts a second adult female moose.
