A man who was struck by a freight train Thursday morning in Puyallup has died.

Police were dispatched at 8:44 a.m. to Meridian and Third. A BNSF train heading towards Tacoma struck the man. He died at the scene, Puyallup police spokesperson Ryan Portmann told The News Tribune.

The 75-year-old man was a Puyallup resident, according to police.

“While the investigation is ongoing, preliminarily, the incident appears to have been an accident, as multiple witnesses reported that the male attempted to scurry across the tracks ahead of a BNSF freight train,” police said in a statement.

The police department said on X that there are road closures are at North Meridian, the Bypass and 4th/5th St NW railroad crossing.
