Kids can learn the basics of fishing and get some gear to take home Saturday.

The annual Kids Fishing Event at American Lake Park will take place May 18 starting at 8 a.m.

Registration is $10, and kids get to keep their fishing rods after. Participants also get at least one fish to bring home to eat, according to the City of Lakewood’s event website.

Bait, tackle and bags for carrying fish will be provided, and volunteers will teach children ages 5-14 how to bait a hook, cast a line and reel it in. Four one-hour sessions start on the hour from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and you can register online.

The event is hosted in collaboration with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. A netted area near the beach is stocked with fish from local hatcheries, according to the city.
