Update, July 24: “We lifted the advisory for people to keep out of the water at Tacoma’s Jack Hyde Beach. We issued the advisory July 17 because of high bacteria levels. Results from water samples we collected July 22 indicate the public health concern is over,” the health department reported Wednesday.

Original post: There’s something dangerous lurking in the waters offshore from Jack Hyde Park on Tacoma’s Ruston Way.

Bacteria. The kind that can give people gastrointestinal illnesses if they swim or even wade in it, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.

“Don’t swim or wade at Jack Hyde Beach in Tacoma,” the department said Wednesday in an alert.

Testing performed July 15 showed high levels of the dangerous bacteria, TPCHD said.

“We posted advisory signs and will continue to monitor bacteria levels there,” the agency said. “When bacteria levels no longer show increased risks to public health, we will remove the signs.”

The park is at 2201 Ruston Way, just west of the Chinese Reconciliation Park.
