Free Tacoma festival this weekend to close part of this downtown street. Learn where

The second-annual Downtown Tacoma Block Party returns to Grit City this Sunday. The free festival will bring vendors, food and fun for residents young and old.

It will also temporarily close a portion of a downtown street.

The block party will be held on Broadway from noon to 8 p.m. between South 9th and South 11th streets, a Tacoma Venues & Events spokesperson told The News Tribune via email. Broadway will be closed from 5 a.m.-11:59 p.m. to allow for preparation and tear down.

The street closure will “be set back from” South 9th Street to ensure the Willie Stewart Academy, Pantages Theater and Republic parking lot aren’t affected, per the email.

However, Gaby Kinner with the Downtown Tacoma Partnership noted that the parking lot is reserved for food trucks.

Block Party helps highlight Downtown Tacoma’s diverse, vibrant culture and last year counted more than 6,000 attendees, according to a Downtown Tacoma Partnership press release. This year’s event will feature a 7 Seas beer garden, photo ops, ax throwing, kids’ activities, line dancing, Flatstick Pub mini-golf, skateboarding lessons and more. There are also perks and a designated area for VIP ticket-holders.

Downtown Tacoma Block Party 2024 boasts live music from Travis Thompson, Saint Deon, Semisoft, Race to the Light and Fantastic Fogman, plus DJs Quietwyat and Taylor Hadden. Kwabi Amoah-Forson, driver of the humanitarian-focused Peace Bus, is set to emcee.

Find free parking throughout downtown as well as complimentary parking at 923 Commerce St. in the Park Plaza North garage.
