Crash between Pierce County deputy and Washington state trooper under investigation

A Washington State Patrol trooper who was making a U-turn on a highway near Buckley was struck by a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy Thursday night.

The 31-year-old trooper was driving a 2020 Ford Explorer on eastbound state Route 410 near Mundy Loss Road when the deputy came up behind him around 8:14 p.m. The 40-year-old deputy was driving a 2018 Ford Explorer, according to a WSP news release.

The trooper started to make a U-turn when the deputy struck his vehicle at the front driver’s side, the release said. The trooper stopped in the westbound lanes. The deputy’s Ford came to a rest in a ditch also in the westbound lanes.

The trooper sustained a small cut and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. He has since been released, according to a WSP spokesperson.

The cause for the crash is under investigation. Drugs and alcohol were determined not to be involved. The roadway was blocked for 2 hours and 58 minutes, the release said.
