After weather delays, road work to improve the 54th Avenue overpass across Interstate 5 in Fife is scheduled to move forward starting today.

The Washington State Department of Transportation in Tacoma announced on its website that the overpass will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday as crews repave the overpass and the northbound I-5 on- and off-ramps as part of a preservation project.

As part of the $1.97 million project:

  • The 54th Avenue overpass will close to all traffic.
  • Northbound I-5 exit to 54th Avenue will close.
  • Northbound I-5 on-ramp from 54th Avenue will close.
  • Southbound I-5 on-ramp from northbound 54th Avenue will close.

“Sections of the ramps and 54th Avenue south of I-5 are showing signs of wear and tear. This includes cracks and ruts. Several emergency pothole repairs have occurred in the past year,” WSDOT reported. “Improving the highway surface eliminates and helps prevent future potholes. Fresh pavement removes cracking pavement and wheel ruts where water can collect. This gives drivers an improved ride; especially when there is driving rain.”
