Anti-hate speaker coming to Tacoma for two weekend events
Tacoma this weekend will welcome a speaker who is a close relative of one of nine people shot and killed last month inside Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
Alana Simmons is the granddaughter of Daniel L. Simmons Sr., one of the victims in the tragedy that Charleston authorities are calling a hate crime allegedly committed by Dylan Roof.
Simmons will be in Tacoma as part of the Hate Won’t Win Challenge.
1000 Man Family March and Festival
When: 10 a.m. Saturday; park festivities afterward until 4 p.m.
Where: The march starts at New Covenant Church, 23rd and MLK Jr. Way, and ends at People's Community Park.
“Hate Won’t Win” Challenge
When: 3-5 p.m., Sunday
Where: Bethlehem Baptist Church, 4818 Portland Ave. E.
