An early-morning apartment fire in Tacoma on Monday displaced 10 people and seriously injured one.

The Tacoma Fire Department reported on X that the incident took place at 3:19 a.m. in the 2900 block of South D Street. A preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was the result of a small butane torch, like a lighter, that exploded while in use, the department said.

Fire officials said on X that the fire started on the first floor of the building, extending through the second floor and up to the roof. The department rescued two cats and transported one patient to the hospital with serious injuries.
