Puyallup drivers: Plan ahead for highway lane closures early next week

Commuters driving on state Route 167 and state Route 512 in the Puyallup area will experience delays on Monday, Aug. 18, through Wednesday, Aug. 20, according to a news release from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

Crews will start work on SR 167 Monday night, going into Tuesday morning, according to the news release. From 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., the right lane of northbound SR 167 will be closed. At 10 p.m., the right lane of southbound SR 167 to the westbound SR 512 off-ramp will be closed until 6 a.m.

Tuesday at 10 p.m., crews will close the left lane on both directions of SR 512, the news release states. The eastbound lane will reopen at 4 a.m. Wednesday and the westbound lane will reopen at 6 a.m.

Construction workers will make repairs to SR 167’s guardrails and SR 512’s cable rail. During the closures, WSDOT advises drivers to plan ahead and find alternate routes.

This work is a part of WSDOT’s $2.83 billion initiative to complete unfinished highways, including SR 167, according to WSDOT’s website.

“The SR 167 Completion Project constructs 6 new miles of tolled highway between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma and builds sidewalks and shared-use paths for non-motorized travelers,” the website states.

The project is estimated to be completed in 2030.

“Completing this unfinished highway will greatly benefit the movement of freight, improve safety and reduce congestion on local roads and highways in the surrounding area,” the website states.
