I-5 repaving project means overnight lane closures in Pierce County

Interstate 5 in Fife will see lane closures between Sept. 5 and 14 as the Washington State Department of Transportation repaves the roadway.

The interstate will be repaved from Porter Way on southbound I-5 to Wapato Way, according to a release from WSDOT. The roadway will have four lanes closed and one lane open each night of the project, starting as early as 7:30 p.m. and ending as late as 10:30 a.m. the next day. The closures will start and end at different times each night.

The department is encouraging riders to use alternative routes and plan ahead if they intend to travel on I-5 during the project.

The repaving is part of WSDOT’s SR 167 Completion Project, an effort to build six miles of new tolled highway between Puyallup and the Port of Tacoma. That project and another project in King County are jointly funded by $2.83 billion underneath the umbrella of the Puget Sound Gateway Program, according to WSDOT.
