A Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy shot and injured a domestic violence suspect shortly after noon Sunday, a spokeswoman for the department said.

About 12:10 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 12600 block of 106th Avenue Court East in the Puyallup area after a report of domestic violence involving a weapon, Deputy Carly Cappetto said.

A woman in her 40s and two children fled the residence, then deputies arrived and reported that 25-30 gunshots were fired from a back window, she said.

“Surrounding homes had to be evacuated,” said Cappetto in a Facebook post. “Deputies attempted to negotiate with the male inside the home, but several shots continued to be fired from inside.”

Gunfire was returned. About 20 minutes later, deputies reported that the suspect, a man also in his 40s, had been shot. Although injured, the suspect emerged from the home under his own power and was taken into custody without incident, she said.

He was taken to an area hospital for his injuries, she said. No deputies were injured.

The children also were not injured, although the woman suffered a domestic violence-related injury, Cappetto said.

Because a deputy-involved shooting took place, the incident will be investigated by the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, she said.
