The Puyallup Police Department confirmed Saturday morning that a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train passing through downtown Puyallup around 6:40 a.m.

Captain Kevin Gill told The News Tribune around 9 a.m. that the train was still blocking multiple intersections near North Meridian Avenue, including North Meridian at East Stewart Avenue, 3rd Street Southeast (by the bypass) and 5th Street Southeast (by the Powerhouse Restaurant and Brewery). Gill said those intersections will likely be blocked for the next hour or so.

In a press release sent around 9:20 a.m., the Puyallup Police Department said a woman in her early 50s was found deceased at the scene. A name and city of origin has not been released.

The cause of the fatal collision is still under investigation and video footage is being reviewed, Gill said. Investigators have been speaking with the conductors and looking for other witnesses, he said.

The Metro Cities Major Collision Response Team is leading the investigation in coordination with the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s office, according to the press release.
