Residents of a Tacoma neighborhood sheltered in place after a gas leak Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were dispatched at 12:17 p.m. to North 5th Street and North Sheridian. Construction crews were digging when they hit a gas line, Tacoma Fire Department spokesperson Chelsea Shepherd told The News Tribune.

She said there is a “fairly significant” leak after a big gas pipe was hit.

Shepherd said Tacoma Fire hazmat crews secured the scene. They went door-to-door to ask residents nearby to shelter while Puget Sound Energy crews finishing repairing the line.

Evacuation orders have not been issued, but crews are on standby. No one was injured.

Update: The gas is no longer leaking, according to Tacoma Fire in an update.

Residents are not asked to shelter-in-place anymore but are advised to use caution in the area.

PSE crews are still in the neighborhood for the next few hours to finish the repair.
