One dead, both directions of State Route 162 blocked after car hits pedestrian

One person is dead following a car/pedestrian collision on State Route 162 in Orting, Washington State Patrol Trooper Kameron Watts posted on X.

The collision was reported at 5:01 p.m. Friday near 136 Street East. Both directions of traffic on SR 162 are blocked.

State troopers and a WSP collision technician are en route to the scene to investigate, the post noted. The Orting Police Department is assisting with traffic control.

Update: As of 6:01 p.m., eastbound traffic on SR 162 is being re-routed at the intersection on 128 Street East, while westbound traffic will be able to flow through until the technician arrives on the scene, Watts posted.

Update: As of 6:26 p.m., traffic is blocked and being rerouted in both directions of SR 162 between 128 Street East and 134 Street Court East. Officials estimate the technician investigation will take about an hour to complete.

Update: The collision occurred after a vehicle driving eastbound on SR 162 struck and killed a 79-year-old Puyallup woman attempting to cross from the eastbound to westbound lane, according to a WSP press memo. The cause remains under investigation. It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved.

The roadway was blocked for 2 hours and 58 minutes.
