University Place woman killed in crash after being reported missing identified

A University Place woman who died after a train struck the vehicle she was in last week near the Steilacoom Ferry Dock has been identified, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Virginia Thompson, 90, died from multiple blunt-force injuries on Nov. 24 near the 50 block of Union Avenue, the office wrote in a news release. Her manner of death was ruled an accident.

Thompson’s son reported Thompson and her 92-year-old husband missing that day, and deputies were looking for them when the crash occurred. Their son told deputies that his parents have dementia and had not returned to the house, The News Tribune reported.

The call for the crash came in at 11:18 p.m. Bystanders rescued Thompson’s husband, who was the driver, just before the crash, but she died at the scene after suffering “catastrophic injuries.”

Thompson’s husband was taken to a hospital for treatment.
