Residents of a home near University Place have been displaced after a fire Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters were dispatched around 12:15 p.m. near Menlo Drive West and 33rd Street West, according to West Pierce Fire & Rescue on X.

No people were at the house when the fire occurred, but 12 cats and dogs died, WPFR spokesperson Emily Tencer told The News Tribune.

She said fire, water and smoke heavily damaged the home. The residents who live there were displaced. A chaplain is working to help them.

As of right now, the fire is under control. The roadway was blocked from the fire trucks and rigs, Tencer said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
