Plan to drive on SR 509 in Tacoma this week? Watch out for nightly lane closure
One lane of northbound State Route 509 will be closed for multiple nights this week for bridge construction, the Washington State Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.
From 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. starting Tuesday night and ending Thursday morning, expect one lane of SR 509 to be closed from Alexander Avenue East to Taylor Way.
The work is dependent on the weather conditions and could be rescheduled, according to a news release. Drivers are encouraged to make alternative arrangements and be cautious when driving near the work zone.
Construction crews will be setting bridge girders over the highway, which are a common type of support beam for traffic bridges. The new bridges will be a pedestrian crossing over Wapato Creek and a bridge designed for carrying traffic from southbound SR 509, the release read.
This construction is part of the State Route 167 Completion Project, an initiative to build six miles of tolled highway between the Port of Tacoma and Puyallup.
