Double homicide reported on Pierce County island — investigation underway
Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies responded Thursday to a possible double homicide on Herron Island, a quiet community about three miles west of Lakebay.
The initial response came at about 4 p.m. at a residence in the 700 block of East Herron Boulevard. Deputies had been asked to conduct “a welfare check on a man and woman who had not been seen and not shown up for work,” according to sheriff’s spokesperson Carly Cappetto.
Inside the home, deputies found a woman, 64, and a man 39. Both were dead. Both appeared to have knife wounds, Cappetto said.
“We believe the victims have been deceased over the last week,” Cappetto said in video accompanying the statement. “There is no suspect in custody, and detectives and forensics are on scene.”’
Herron Island, accessible only by ferry, lies in the southern part of Puget Sound, It is privately owned, operated as a non-profit Washington corporation, governed by a board of trustees, according to the Homeowners’ Association of Herron Island. The population hovers around 150. Most residents are 65 or older, according to island manager Kimberly Watts, who spoke to The News Tribune recently for a story unrelated to Thursday’s incident.
