‘Officer down’ alert sent by law enforcement following collision in Tacoma

A Washington State Patrol trooper has been hurt in the Tacoma Tideflats, though specific details are still unclear.

“We’ve had a very serious incident on southbound 509,” WSP Public Affairs Director Chris Loftis said when reached Friday evening, adding that a more formal statement would be forthcoming.

Both directions of 509 have been closed between Interstate 705 and Port of Tacoma Road, according to a social media post from the state Department of Transportation.

Traffic on local law enforcement scanners begin buzzing at 7:28 p.m. with an “officer down” alert, and calls for assistance.

An earlier social media post from WSDOT noted a collision on 509 near Port of Tacoma Road at 7:36 p.m., but offered no other detail.

Tacoma Police spokesperson Shelbie Boyd referred inquiries to the State Patrol.

“They’re primary on it,” she said.
